was issued to John S. Allen of Putnam County, Indiana for five shares of capital stock ( per share). Hand signed by company
president Chaucey Rose
and secretary W. K. Edward. Certificate is about 6” x 12.” Black print on pale-blue paper.
The Terre-Haute and Richmond Railroad was chartered in 1847 to build a railroad across Indiana via Indianapolis, from Richmond, Indiana in the east to Terre Haute in the west. The company was funded by Indianapolis investors led by Chauncey Rose, along with Rose’s New York-based financier brother John Rose. The first leg of the road from Indianapolis west toward St. Louis to Terre Haute was completed in 1851 by the Terre Haute and Richmond Railroad, later renamed the Terre Haute and Indianapolis Railroad by 1865, to more accurately reflect its final route.
