A native of Prosser, Washington, Mel Stottlemyre, Jr. was selected in Round 1 (#3 overall) of the 1985 MLB Amateur Draft by the Houston Astros, and pitched for the Astros organization through the 1987 season. Beginning in 1988, Stottlemyre pitched in the Kansas City Royals system, reaching the Major Leagues with that team in 1990.
Stottlemyre began his coaching career while with the University of Nevada - Las Vegas, serving as their pitching coach. While with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, he served as the Pitching Coach for the Yakima Bears, Lancaster JetHawks, El Paso Diablos and the Missoula Osprey. He was hired as the Pitching Coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009, and after the 2010 season served as a roving minor league pitching instructor. He returned to the Diamondbacks Major League staff in 2013 as Bullpen Coach under manager Kirk Gibson. Stottlemyre has also served as Pitching Coach for the Major League Seattle Mariners and Miami Marlins.
