Born in Monterey Park, California, Dan Haren pitched for Pepperdine University, as was selected in Round 2 of the 2001 MLB Amateur Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, reaching the Major Leagues in 2003. Haren subsequently pitched for the Oakland A's, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins and Chicago Cubs. Haren is one of only a small number of pitchers to have beaten all 30 Major League teams in the course of his career.
